ANNOTATION
Paul struggles to survive and describe the horrors of a war he doesn't understand.
SUMMARY
Paul is a young twenty-year old who has been sent to the front lines of the German army in WW I. The story is told through is perspective. He and his friends enlisted at the age of eighteen with excitement and enthusiasm. They are put through cruel and brutal training where they are oppressed and bullied by Corporal Himmelstoss. After several weeks they are sent to the front lines. They are quickly introduced to the horrors of the war when they are bombarded as they come to the trenches. They watch as many of their comrades fall and are killed in horrific ways. The trench battles are grinding and humanity is something of the past causes many of the soldiers to go made. Food is scarce, hunger is commonplace, and death is a constant companion. Even with all of this Paul and his comrades/friends find ways to keep their humanity through humor and the simple comforts of life.
However, despite their attempts to keep up their spirits and survive, Paul witnesses the painful and terrible death of each of his comrades in arms and closest friends. Eventually, Paul received leave time and is able to go home for a while. He finds this time hard to adjust to and the peace and quiet of home makes him miss his friends and guilty that they are all still fighting while he is safe. He is then sent to training for several weeks after his leave, and then is reunited with his friends on the front lines. He witnesses horrific battles and the suffering of men on both sides of the line. He questions the purpose of the war and those who caused it.
After years of battles, injuries, death, and loss Paul finds himself the sole survivor of his company. He determines that he will fight against the kind of hatred that caused this war. Sadly and ironically, Paul is killed in October 1918-one month before the armistice and end of the war. None of his company survive the war.
MY REVIEW
This classic story on the experience of the trench battles of WW I and the horrors the soldiers experienced there. It is a painful, disgusting, heartbraking, and devastating story. The author expertly transports the reader into the trenches. As I read I felt as if I could hear the terrifying whistles of the shells, the shuddering of the earth, the bits of dirt, wood, metal and shrapnel screaming through the air, the screams and gurgles of the injured and dying, feel hunger pangs, the deep sorrow of loss, the deafening silence between battles and during their leave from the war.
Remarque is a master of words and his incredible work in this book is a timeless treasure of an intimate insight of the war that began modern warfare as we know it. It is a story of tragic heroism. Remarque's book will continue to go down in history as one of the great works that have memorialized the lost generation.
