ANNOTATION
When seven-year-old Elsa's grandmother dies, she soon learns her adventure is just beginning.

SUMMARY
At school, Elsa is an outcast who is constantly made fun of and bullied by the other children. At home, Elsa lives with her mother and step-father whom she doesn't quite see eye to eye with. Every other weekend, Elsa visits her father and step mother where again, she feels left out. Elsa has two things that make her feel that life is worth living: Harry Potter and her  greatest, most adventurous best friend in the world: her grandmother.

When her grandmother dies, Elsa feels completely lost. That is until she learns that her grandmother had another life that Elsa did not know about. The fairytales Elsa grew up hearing from her grandmother suddenly seem to become real as Elsa learns more about her life and the life of her grandmother. Her grandmother prepares letters with clues that she asks Elsa to deliver. This takes Elsa on her greatest adventure yet.

MY REVIEW
Wow, this book was truly incredible. In the beginning it completely captured my interest but it soon died off and I wasn't sure where the book was going. However, I continued reading and I am so glad I did! I grew to love every character in this book. I fell in love with the the fairytales Elsa's grandmother told her. It inspired me to do more imaginative play with my children and led to memories I'll cherish forever. Backman tied everything together masterfully at the end, leaving me in awe. What a beautiful book.

This book is extremely touching and beautifully written. There are Harry Potter references that anyone who loves that series will enjoy. It is inspiring for those who wish to mend relationships or find their place in this world. It's humorous and even has a fantasy element to it. Each person in this book has a story. Some are terrifying, some are heartbreaking, some are hilarious, but every one has a beautiful moral.

Discerning My Rating Scale

THE QUALITY SCALE The quality scale is based on precious metals-a ranking system that is generally universal and easy to understand.  Gold - The standard for all other books to follow. Strong, well developed characters and story line with no foreseeable possibility of the book being tarnished by time.   Silver -Strong quality book with a few areas in need of a bit more polishing. Bronze   - Appreciable parts spread throughout the book, but lacking in many areas leaving the reader wanting more. Plastic - A cheap and sad excuse of a book. THE POPULARITY SCALE Just as the quality scale is based on precious metals the popularity scale is related in that it is based on precious stones and their popularity. Again, a generally universal and easy to understand system. Diamond -Will stand the test of time. Everyone clamors for it. Emerald -Generally liked by the majority. Sapphire -Takes time to grow on you. Received general appreciation. Ruby -For...
